AdeleAdkins was the daughter of a young single mother who was raised in various working class London neighborhoods. When she was a child, she enjoyed singing contemporary pop music and learned how to play the guitar and the clarinet. She discovered Etta who was a mid-century Rhythm-and blues vocalist, in her teens, and started to think about a career as a musician. She was attending a secondary school for the visual and performing arts that was funded by the government. A friend uploaded songs Adkins had written on Myspace. After graduating her music caught the attention of record labels. She signed a contract in the year 2006 with XL Recordings.
